56th Lexington County Peach Festival   Leave a comment

The 56th Festival: Things to Know

The 56th Lexington County Peach Festival will be held July 4, 2014 in Gilbert, SC. The festival takes place in the Gilbert Community Park located on Rikard Circle behind Gilbert United Methodist Church and between Gilbert Primary and Gilbert Middle Schools.

  • Frequently Asked Questions: View these FAQs to learn more about the festival.

  • Festival Map: Use this Google Map to help find your way around Gilbert.

Festival Overview

For 56 years, the Town of Gilbert has hosted the Lexington County Peach Festival, and it is recognized as one of the most successful and prestigious events of its kind in the southeast United States. Summer after summer in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s, the community was alive with the harvesting, packing, and shipping of peaches. Today, while we find only a few peach farms still in operation, the peach remains (in our minds) the “Queen of all Fruits” and worthy of “honor” in our small town.

The Lexington County Peach Festival is held every year on July 4th (or July 3rd if the 4th is on a Sunday) in Gilbert, SC at the Gilbert Community Park. Festivities kick off every year with the parade at 9:30 am and stretch into the night until 10:00 pm when we bring the day to a close with a dazzling display of fireworks. We hope you plan to spend July 4th with us in Gilbert as you enjoy the live entertainment, parade, over 100 Art & Craft Exhibits, an antique car show, a Revolutionary War Re-enactment, a tractor show, children’s rides, and numerous food items specializing in “Peachy” delights!  A student Peachy Art Contest held in May at the various schools and the various divisions of the Peach Pageants scheduled for June 28 are events also held in conjunction with the Peach Festival.

Short Term Thinking Keeps You from Seeing Clearly   Leave a comment

Short Term Thinking Keeps You from Seeing Clearly

“His followers discussed the meaning of this, saying, ‘He said this because we have no bread.’ Knowing what they were talking about, Jesus asked them, ‘Why are you talking about not having bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your minds closed?’” (Mark 8:16-17 NCV)

You’re going to miss what God is doing in your life if you remain focused on the here-and-now and not what God wants to do in your life long term. When you’re thinking about comfort rather than character, when you’re thinking about your happiness and not your holiness, when you’re thinking about enjoying now instead of preparing for eternity, you’re caught up in short-term thinking, and it will keep you from seeing life clearly.

This is what happened with the disciples. Jesus was trying to teach them a lesson about pride by using yeast as a metaphor. The Bible says in Mark 8:16-17, “His followers discussed the meaning of this, saying, ‘He said this because we have no bread.’ Knowing what they were talking about, Jesus asked them, ‘Why are you talking about not having bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your minds closed?’” (NCV)

Jesus was trying to teach the disciples a lesson about life, and they thought he was talking about lunch! He was talking about the need for maturity, and they were talking about their next meal. That’s short-term thinking.

Short-term thinking keeps us from seeing how God is working in our lives. It’s one of the great weaknesses of American culture. It’s hard to think long-term today because everything in our society teaches you to do the opposite. We rob the future to enjoy today. We’re setting up years and years of unpayable debt to future generations so we can do what we want now.

Whenever you’re thinking short-term, you can’t see what God’s doing in your life. You can’t see his long-range plans for your character when you’re just thinking about your own comfort.

Talk It Over

  • What are the small ways you can keep a long-term, eternal mindset throughout your day?
  • What would long-term thinking look like in your family? Your career? Your spiritual walk?
  • Where do you see God working in your life?
